Monday, 7 January 2019

4:00pm - 6:00pm PST
Room 4C-2
Washington State Convention & Trade Center, Seattle WA

Many new modern technologies have been developed for dealing with data analysis issues in the age of `Big Data'. These include tools and software designed for specific applications, such as for the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), and the newly released data from Gaia, TESS and Kepler, or others focusing on specific issues in spatial-, spectral- and time-domains. However, key challenges for the community remain: (1) to raise the awareness of astronomers to existing opportunities, and (2) to find the right software for application to particular problems.

We will hold a panel discussion to address these challenges and highlight the use of appropriate statistics-aware tools. Our panel will consist of scientists involved in development of the methods, tools and open source software and will comprise of members of the Astropy project, DIRAC Institute, MAST, LSST and ZTF.

Moderator: Aneta Siemiginowska (CfA)

The panelists are:

Daniela Huppenkothen (DIRAC Institute, University of Washington)
Arfon Smith (MAST, Space Telescope Science Institute)
Zeljko Ivezic (LSST, University of Washington)
Brigitta Sipicz (Astropy Project)
Ashish Mahabal (Caltech, ZTF)
Meg Schwamb (Gemini North, LSST SSSC)

The session will begin with brief statements by each panelist, followed by a discussion on the issues specific to the session and questions from the participants. We also plan to discuss the possible community input to the Astro2020 decadal survey. We will close the session with general topics of interest to AstroStatistics and AstroInformatics and short communication from the Working Group.

This session is organized by the AAS Working Group on Astroinformatics and Astrostatistics (WGAA) and CHASC. We have organized many well attended sessions at the past AAS meetings. Interest in the community in advanced/applied statistical methods has been increasing steadily over the last decade. We hope the session will result in the specific ideas on sharing and distributing the knowledge in the field.
